"Well, there's still hope; once I've saved enough money to pay back my parents' debts to him-that should take another five or six years-I'll do it without fail. I'll cut myself completely loose then."
There is a short lived moment in the Johnny series when
Johnny is truly free from the triangular desires. It is just after he has
returned from
Heaven and Hell, the effects of Mr. Eff and Psycho Doughboy, having been
shed and the Moose having consumed itself. However, the moment is short
lived with the introduction of a new character, the character of Reverend
Meat.
"Oh it terrifies me that you don't remember, though
it's no surprise.
You don't remember the pretty girl that gave me to
you? Being
in her room? Doing what you did? What she did to you?
The
girl's not important, but the motivation is. Until
now, there has
been no need for me to surface."
Another minor character is reintroduced as well. A small
cockroach which Johnny sees as the embodiment of complete desensitization.
Although little is known about this mute character, he has constantly plagued
Johnny by returning even after having been killed. However, rather than
killing him again, Johnny now sees this character as a teacher, a thing
to mimic and to embody.
Once again, strange parallels to Don Quixote seem
to appear as this character of Mr. Samsa is introduced. In Don Quixote,
the main character wishes to be like the greatest knight of all, Amadis
of Gaul. Now if we remember, Amadis is a literary character, as is Mr.
Samsa, coming from a short story by Franz Kafka, entitled "The Metamorphosis".
Both characters are the same, as they are the embodiment of perfection,
and thus, the mediator overshadowing the goal of perfection.
On the other hand, there is Reverend Meat, a character
which is not mirrored in Don Quixote. He represents all that Johnny hates
about himself, his emotions, his longings and his lust. These things that
Johnny thinks of as "extraneous", become exactly that, personified as Reverend
Meat. Therefore, as he struggles to become more like Samsa, he is, in effect,
struggling against Reverend Meat, or his own biology, who has also becomes
a mediator overshadowing the goal of perfection. However, unlike Mr. Samsa-who
has no mediator, since his goal of desensitization has been achieved through
desensitization-Reverend Meat is fighting to survive, to maintain his hold
over Johnny's emotions, and thus, Johnny becomes his mediator.
Thus, we have two triangles which have formed just between
these two characters: Johnny, who fights to rid himself of his "extraneous"
emotions (Reverend Meat), and Reverend Meat, who wishes to survive, through
keeping Johnny hungry. A duality which cannot exist without the other,
and despite Johnny's attempt to distance himself, literally, from Reverend
Meat, the effect of the mediator is still felt. The triangle is still in
place.
